US biotechnology company Amyris said Thursday it has reached an agreement with Brazilian ethanol producer ETH Bioenergia on a joint venture to produce renewable farnesene, a biomass-based hydrocarbon that forms the basis for a range of products from specialty chemicals to fuels.
The joint venture with ETH is Amyris’ sixth production agreement in Brazil, Europe and the US for the manufacturing of sugar-based renewable chemicals.
Under the deal, ETH would provide sugarcane crushing capacity while California-based Amyris would use its technology to convert the sugar into farnesene, Amyris said.
