Brazil’s Power-Plant Auction Delayed by Politics

razil’s turbulent politics are getting in the way of a major auction of power-plant concessions, increasing the likelihood that the government won’t be able to meet this year’s already reduced fiscal targets.

President Dilma Rousseff’s administration is looking to auction contracts to operate 29 existing power plants as part of an effort to shrink the nation’s massive budget hole. An auction set for Friday was estimated to have raised at least $3 billion in upfront fees that would have gone straight to the National Treasury to help Brazil balance its books.
