Sebastiao do Rego Barros, a career diplomat who also led Brazil’s ANP oil regulatory agency died Monday in a fall from his 11th-floor apartment in Rio de Janeiro, authorities said. He was 75.
Barros fell from the window of his residence overlooking Copacabana beach about midday.
Police said that they have opened an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding his death and refused to confirm or deny if it was an accident or suicide.
“It is with regret that the ANP reports the death of Ambassador Sebastiao do Rego Barros, who was director of the Agency between 2002 and 2005, as well as having served as Brazil’s ambassador in different countries,” said the regulatory agency in a communique.
