“The river now is a sterile and full of mud,” says Sebastião Salgado

During the same week that the attacks left Paris, where he lives with his family, the photographer Sebastião Salgado saw another kind of terror undermine the worth of his childhood: an explosion of mud, which had already made victims in the city of Mariana, killed the Rio Doce. From China, where he was, Salgado traveled 44 hours to get to Espirito Santo, to rediscover the river just before its oxygen ceased to exist altogether.
