Brazil’s Attorney General asks top court to oust house speaker

Brazil’s top prosecutor on Wednesday asked the country’s Supreme Court to remove embattled House Speaker Eduardo Cunha from Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies, the latest twist in a deepening political crisis that has paralyzed the nation’s leadership.

In a filing with Brazil’s top court, Attorney General Rodrigo Janot asked that Mr. Cunha be removed from the lower house for allegedly using his speaker’s position to obstruct an investigation into a continuing corruption probe in which Mr. Cunha has been implicated.

Mr. Janot said Mr. Cunha’s removal is necessary to ensure that the investigation continues unimpeded by politics.
