Justice José Antônio Dias Toffoli from Brazil’s Supreme Court spoke this Wednesday, July 6th at a panel at the Wilson Center in Washington DC. During the panel he touched on the need for the Supreme Court to return to a discussion about sentencing defendants to prison before they exhaust the opportunity to appeal. Toffoli added that there are exceptions for every case, but a judicial system where there are numerous chances of appeal causes many to delay their eminent prison. In February, the Justice voted in favor of the Supreme Court decision (seven to one) stating that a sentence could occur before the final court decision.
