This past Thursday, July 14, Judge Sergio Moro defended the continuation of the Car Wash investigation in strengthening the democracy in Brazil at an event at the Wilson Center in Washington, D.C. He expressed his concern about the corruption scheme involving Brazil’s state oil company by affirming that illicit money activity seems to be the rule, and not the exception. Moro also believes in the importance of the private sector in the fight against corruption. “Private companies should do their homework and say no to illicit forms of payments by implementing internal mechanisms against such activities as well as reporting eventual forms of illegal services from government officials”. He admitted to the criticism against the investigations, but reaffirmed the impartiality of Lava Jato and denied the accusations which stated that the investigations had political objectives.
