Moro, Potential Candidate for “Juizão”

Last Thursday, during a panel at the Woodrow Wilson Center, Federal Judge Sergio Moro spoke on the importance of transparency for democracy in Brazil. When asked about a potential political career, he denied the speculation concerning his presidential candidacy in 2018. Judge Moro reiterated his trust in the legislative branch and its impartiality, stating that “People say the judiciary is acting in political means, but it is the corrupt politicians who make it political, not the judicial system”. Furthermore, he expressed his gratitude towards the private sector, which collaborated with him in the Lava Jato investigation and calls for the Executive and Legislative branch to do the same. Judge Moro made it clear that his job is focused on ending corruption, regardless of political parties and that justice is only achieved when the “innocent are set free and the guilty suffer the consequences”
